Orange France, SNCF ink wholesale fibre agreement

11 May 2016

Orange France has signed a ten-year wholesale agreement with France’s national state-owned railway company SNCF to lease excess capacity on the latter’s fibre-optic network to its own retail business and other telecoms operators. Under the agreement (which is renewable up to 2050), Orange will initially gain access to around 4,300km of fibre-optic cabling, which is set to be extended to over 14,000km by 2024 and 17,000km (2030). SNCF Reseau will be responsible for the rollout and the maintenance of the fibre network, which has been in deployment for five years.

TeleGeography notes that Orange France plans to triple its investments in fibre by 2020 and increase the number of connected homes from 5.5 million in 2015 to twelve million in 2018 and 20 million (2022), in line with the government’s target of having 100% of the French population eligible for ultra-high speed broadband services by 2022.
