Kyrgyzstan’s Aktel, which previously operated CDMA mobile services under the Fonex and 7Mobile brands, has announced that it has ceased providing the CDMA2000-based services throughout the country as of 7 May 2016, due to the expiration of licence No. 15-1312-KR. The operator began switching off access to the technology in January this year when it terminated CDMA services in the Jalal-Abad and Osh districts, before shutting down the service in the regions of Naryn and Talas the following month.
Aktel secured a mobile concession in 2002 and launched services under the Fonex banner in November 2003. In December 2013 the Bishkek Inter-District Court recognised Aktel as bankrupt, after FinanceCreditBank launched a lawsuit against the company, claiming that it was owed around KGS8 million (USD147 million) from the wireless operator, and national operator Kyrgyztelecom disconnected Aktel from its telecoms exchanges in Q4 2014. Reports later emerged claiming that Aktel’s assets had been transferred to a new entity, named Zheti Mobile or Jeti Mobile, with Aktel retaining all debts, whilst the company’s CDMA service was recently operated via a separate unit named Seven Mobile (with its website http://7mobile.kg now displaying no content).
