State-backed full service provider China Telecom has booked turnover of CNY86.43 billion (USD13.33 billion) for the three months ended 31 March 2016, an increase of 6.1% compared to the same period of 2015. Operating expenses also increased, however, expanding by 7.3% year-on-year to CNY79.06 billion and narrowing growth in net profit to 1.7%, reaching CNY5.14 billion. In terms of subscribers, Telecom counted 202.64 million mobile users, up from 197.90 million three months earlier, and of which 74.91 million were 4G terminal users (58.46 million in Q4 2015). The trend for growing data usage at the expense of traditional voice services continued, with Telecom reporting total handset data traffic of 228,400 TB (up 21.3% quarter-on-quarter), whilst voice usage dipped 1.3% q-o-q to 167.58 billion minutes. Similarly, in the fixed sector Telecom added 3.11 million net new broadband customers to bring the total to 116.17 million and disconnected 1.46 million net fixed voice users, reducing the subscriber base to 132.86 million.
