1 Apr 2016

UK-owned full service provider UPC Cablecom has acquired the cable network of Fernsehgenossenschaft Schmerikon (FG Schmerikon), effective from 1 January 2016, although financial details of the transaction were not made public. The acquired network infrastructure covers around 1,500 customers. Cablecom notes that it has been a network partner for the municipality of Schmerikon in St Gallen canton since the mid-nineties. FG Schmerikon’s managing board decided to sell the infrastructure to guarantee the network’s continued existence, the cableco itself is to be dissolved following the sale. In its press release, Cablecom quoted the managing board of FG Schmerikon as saying: ‘The future-proof glass fibre-optic infrastructure requires a high level of expert knowledge, financial and technical resources, as well as competent advice for customers. UPC Cablecom can offer our customers all of this, so that the future of the glass fibre-optic cable network in Schmerikon is secured.’
