Vodafone agrees to take over YOU Broadband

30 Mar 2016

Vodafone India has signed an agreement to acquire cable broadband provider YOU Broadband for INR4 billion (USD59.9 million) and has sought approval of the deal from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), the Economic Times writes. YOU Broadband operates a network consisting of a 3,000km fibre-optic backbone with last-mile connections provided by 6,000km of coaxial cable. The acquisition is part of Vodafone’s wider strategy of increasing its presence in the fixed broadband market, with the takeover expected to bolster the cellco’s mobile data services.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, YOU claimed approximately 499,000 broadband subscribers at the end of 2015, up from 429,352 a year earlier, and equating to around 3.0% of the broadband market.
