Vodafone Hungary launches ADSL replacement service, HomeNet

Budapest-based mobile operator Vodafone Hungary this week announced the launch of what it terms an ADSL replacement service, HomeNet, using its 4G mobile network to provide a stable wireless alternative to people living in areas not served by high speed fixed broadband alternatives. The cellco notes that more than half a million Hungarian households currently sit beyond the reach of the traditional telcos’ fixed infrastructure. Its HomeNet service is designed to provide them with connectivity via a two-year contract plan with SIM costing HUF5,990 (USD21.6) per month, although it also offers a discounted plan (HUF4,990, for Vodafone Family Service). HomeNet 4G-based packages include 50GB per month (any time), plus an additional 100GB of downloads (between midnight and 6am). Maximum bandwidths are 75Mbps/25Mbps (down/uplink) and users can either purchase additional top-ups or have their connection throttled to 150kbps/128kbps if they exceed their usage quota. Further, HomeNet is billed as mobile, inasmuch as it can be used anywhere in the country where Vodafone’s 4G signal is present (i.e. over 90%).
