21 Mar 2016

MTN Congo and Airtel Congo, the two largest cellcos by subscribers in the Republic of the Congo, were reportedly ordered to block all communications during the presidential election that took place yesterday, with the block also required to remain in place today. Reuters cites a government source as saying: ‘The Minister of the Interior indeed signed and sent a letter to … MTN Congo and Airtel Congo to tell them that the state wants them to cut off communication on 20 and 21 March for reasons of security and public tranquillity.’ Meanwhile, the opposition to the incumbent government has criticised the move, claiming that it could hamper the work of election monitors.
