Hong Kong telco Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) has deployed a new mobile fronthaul solution from California-based vendor Infinera. Mobile fronthaul is utilised in centralised or cloud radio access network (C-RAN) systems where the baseband units (BBUs) and remote radio heads (RRHs) are physically separated and connected by a fibre link which provides speeds of between 2.5Gbps and 10Gbps. While the RRHs remain at the mobile tower, the BBUs are moved to either a central office or to a virtual environment. The deployment model offers low latency, superior synchronisation, low power consumption and high density, Infinera says. HGC’s new fronthaul network will be utilised by its mobile operator sister company 3 Hong Kong and can also be leased by other providers.
