Airtel completes network upgrade in Uganda

7 Mar 2016

Airtel Uganda has completed an upgrade of its 3G mobile data network, paving the way for the future launch of 4G services. Equipment partner ZTE says the 900MHz network modernisation project raises performance while lowering CAPEX via reduced equipment power consumption and tower renting fees. The work involved swapping out equipment at 674 sites, and the cellco is now claiming ‘nationwide’ coverage for its UMTS-900 3G system. Airtel is the second largest mobile operator in Uganda by subscribers, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, with around one-third of the country’s 22.7 million users at the end of September 2015.
