Chinese telecoms equipment vendor Huawei has announced the signing of an agreement with Intercellular for the transformation of the Nigerian operator’s CDMA network to a 4G LTE platform. Under the deal, Huawei will deploy an 800MHz LTE network for Intercellular to meet the growing demand for data services in the West African nation. ‘This LTE collaboration will help Intercellular accelerate our LTE transformation and give our people better and faster network services,’ commented Intercellular’s CEO Emad Sukker. The new LTE network will be deployed and operated in phases, until it eventually covers all of the country’s towns and cities.
Intercellular Nigeria launched commercial fixed-wireless telephony in March 1998, providing services over a CDMA network in Lagos using the 800MHz band. In 2007 the operator received a unified access service (UAS) licence, permitting it to provide a full range of telecoms services without technological limitation.
