TIM, Vodafone Italy test VoLTE, RCS interoperability

29 Feb 2016

Italy’s two largest mobile service providers by subscribers, Telecom Italia (TIM) and Vodafone Italy, have commenced the testing of IP interconnection technology, in efforts to enable subscribers to make high definition voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) calls and to send messages based on the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) standard. In a press release, TIM notes that VoLTE and RCS interoperability is an important step towards ensuring high quality services and improving privacy and security on content exchanged between the two operators. Meanwhile, Fabrizio Rocchio, Director Technology of Vodafone Italy, commented: ‘Vodafone Italy is committed to promoting the use of communication technologies that employ open standards and interoperability in order to maximise the reach and ease of use of the best services on the market … Through this initiative, Vodafone customers already using VoLTE technology [apps, calls and messages] based on RCS, may use them to communicate with customers of other operators.’
