Smartfren to trump rivals with Indonesia's first VoLTE service

24 Feb 2016

Indonesian mobile operator Telekom PT SmartFren (Smartfren) is poised to become the first operator to deploy voice-over LTE (VoLTE), following the selection of Kanata, Canada-based Mitel Networks Corp to roll out its voice and video over LTE platform on Smartfren’s 4G network. The vendor says the new VoLTE service will initially only be available via two new Andromax LTE devices – R2 and E2 – being offered by Smartfren, but the range is set to be expanded in the near future. The cellco intends to commercialise VoLTE before the end of 1Q16. Tariff plans will, it says, not eat into the user’s monthly data cap, while Smarftren director Roberto Saputra hopes the VoLTE enhancement will drive 4G take-up; the operator currently has 1.2 million 4G customers on its network out a total of 13.5 million.
