MTS selects Intracom to support LTE backhaul; confirms 2.6GHz spectrum haul

Russian mobile giant Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has selected Athens-based Intracom Telecom to modernise its network via the deployment of its E-Band, ultra-high capacity Ethernet radio, UltraLink-FX80 equipment. MTS notes that the upgrade addresses its future wireless backhaul needs, as it builds out its LTE and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) networks. The two-year contract, which has been valued at USD25 million, will be implemented by the Greek vendor’s Moscow-based subsidiary, Intracom Svyaz.

In related news, MTS has confirmed that it been awarded a 25MHz national block of 2600MHz spectrum, which will allow it to provide time division duplex LTE (TD-LTE) services across the Russian Federation. The spectrum, which is valid for a period of ten years, is valued at RUB4 billion (USD52.88 million).
