BSNL mulling closing down WiMAX systems in certain areas

19 Feb 2016

State-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is expected to shut down its WiMAX network in areas with small subscriber bases or where equipment has broken down, the Economic Times writes, citing an unnamed BSNL official. ‘There are around 115,000 to 120,000 WiMAX customers on BSNL’s network across 20 BSNL telecom circles. We have asked for data from circles where there are few customers, or sites are faulty and then BSNL will [make] a final call on the closure of WiMAX services at some locations,’ the official was quoted as saying. Whilst the government has divided the country into 22 operating circles, BSNL splits its operations into 26 areas, of which 20 are currently covered by the telco’s WiMAX network. The areas facing potential closure include Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Jharkhand, the official added.
