Indonesian mobile operator XL Axiata has selected Huawei to facilitate its planned network functions virtualisation evolved packet core (NFV-EPC) project as the carrier looks to upgrade its cloud network architecture. The Chinese vendor says its NFV-based CloudEdge solution will provide a bespoke solution to the cellco’s virtual network modernisation requirements, delivering a cloud infrastructure network which is ‘flexible, agile, and open’.
XL Axiata switched on its 4G LTE network last year, and to date has expanded coverage to a number of areas including Jakarta, Bali’s Denpasar, Medan, Surabaya and Yogyakarta, and (in November 2015) Pekanbaru, Batam, Palembang, Purwakarta, Cirebon, Tegal, Pekalongan, Pacitan, Madura, Banjarmasin, and Manado.
With the largest population in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has 240 million people and a fiercely competitive market with seven mobile operators. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, XL claimed 12.7% of all users at end-September with 41.5 million subscribers.
