DirecTV Venezuela to postpone TD-LTE launch?

16 Feb 2016

Pay-TV provider-turned-4G-aspirant DirecTV Venezuela intends to request a postponement of its time division duplex LTE (TD-LTE) rollout obligations, El Mundo reports, citing the company’s general manager Hector Rivero. The executive is reportedly looking to secure an extension from the National Telecommunications Commission (Comision Nacional de Telecomunicaciones, Conatel), and has blamed the company’s troubles on the country’s ongoing currency crisis.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in December 2014 DirecTV won a 2×20MHz 2600MHz 4G licence, via a local holding unit, Galaxy Entertainment Venezuela. According to the bidding rules, as determined in December 2014, the TD-LTE network should operate in the 20 most populous municipalities within the first year of operation, and provide coverage to 70% of the population by 2019.
