Network development helps boost MPT subscriber base to 18m

15 Feb 2016

State-backed telco Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) signed up around 18 million mobile subscribers by the end of 2015 according to its Japanese partner, KDDI. The former monopoly added roughly two million new users in the three months to end-December 2015. The network, which is owned by MPT but operated by a joint venture of KDDI and Sumitomo – dubbed KDDI Summit Global Myanmar (KSGM) – under a revenue sharing deal, was expanded and enhanced with the addition of new base stations during the period under review. Going forward, the Japanese firm said it plans to ‘further enhance levels of network quality, expand the service area in line with customer traffic, enhance its offerings of more detailed customer support, introduce easy-to-use rate systems and augment services for corporate customers.’
