Deutsche Telekom’s Croatian fixed and mobile subsidiary T-Hrvatski Telekom (T-HT) has begun tests of G.fast technology in the capital, Zagreb. The firm says G.fast can boost peak theoretical speeds on its copper network to up to 1Gbps, though initial trials have given average download rates of around 415Mbps, with uploads averaging at 108Mbps. The telco says that 1.4 million households will be covered by the new technology once it is deployed commercially. Rival operator VIPnet, which is part of the Telekom Austria Group, recently revealed plans to deploy EuroDOCSIS 3.1 equipment which will eventually enable it to provide 1Gbps services to the 370,000 premises under its HFC cable broadband network footprint.
