Telkom South Africa is planning to move ADSL subscribers onto its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure in areas where it has deployed the fibre-based platform. In a press release, the company offered 11,000 ADSL subscribers within its fibre-based footprint to sign up to the FTTH plans at no additional cost. ‘DSL customers currently on 2Mbps, 4Mbps and 8Mbps DSL products can move across to the “more stable and reliable fibre network” at no additional charge … During the two-month trial, they also are able to test the 10Mbps and 20Mbps line options and can then make a call at the end of the two months about which package they choose to adopt’, the company said. Following the two-month trial, customers will also have the option to return to their original speed, though the service will be offered over a fibre connection.
According to the operator’s most recent trading update for the third quarter of FY2016 (ended 31 December 2015), the company has passed 1.25 million fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) homes by end-2015, with 56,000 homes connected to its FTTH infrastructure. Further, Telkom announced that it had 1.018 million ADSL subscribers on its books (up 3% year-on-year).
