RCOM pays liberalisation fee for 800MHz airwaves

21 Jan 2016

Reliance Communications (RCOM) has paid the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) INR53.84 billion (USD791.4 million) to liberalise its spectrum in the 800MHz band in 16 circles, the cellco confirmed in a notice to the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). The cellco may be liable to pay a further INR15.60 billion to the DoT as a spectrum usage charge, although the operator is currently disputing the fee. RCOM is now clear to complete the spectrum trading and sharing agreement with Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL), announced earlier this week. Under the deal, RCOM will sell 800MHz spectrum in nine circles to RJIL for an undisclosed sum – rumoured to be around INR45 billion. The pair will also share 800MHz spectrum in 17 circles, and will offer access over each other’s networks via inter-circle roaming (ICR) pacts.
