TDC Denmark has announced that it will soon enable its customers to make and receive voice calls via Wi-Fi connection, in a bid to improve indoor coverage and expand its voice services to areas with scarce mobile network availability. The operator disclosed that the Wi-Fi Calling service will be commercially available as soon as compatible handsets have been released on the market, which is scheduled for ‘later in 2016’. Peter Schleidt, CEO of TDC Operations, said: ‘This is a huge step forward for the mobile coverage in Denmark. With both Wi-Fi calling and other new technologies for indoor mobile coverage, TDC is addressing two of the biggest challenges when it comes to ensuring optimal services to all Danes … [mobile network availability] in rural areas and coverage in buildings in urban areas. ’ Further, the operator claimed that the technology will potentially provide 2.6 million new ‘cell towers’ via Denmark’s network of private broadband connections, thus increasing the indoor mobile footprint to more than 99%.
