Unicom and Telecom team up to take on Mobile

14 Jan 2016

China Telecom and China Unicom have signed a partnership deal agreeing to cooperate on key areas in an effort to compete more effectively with cellular market leader China Mobile, which currently represents more than 63% of the nation’s mobile subscribers, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database. China Daily writes that the duo will ‘deepen their cooperation in 4G network construction, smartphone technology standardisation, customer services and overseas roaming. Telecom’s general manager, Yang Jie, was also quoted as saying the deal will involve capital cooperation, although no further details were forthcoming. Referring to rumours last year of a planned merger of Unicom and Telecom, Yang Jie stressed that the current partnership deal does not represent a restructuring of the two companies, adding that the pair will remain independent, competing entities.
