Plans to establish islandwide mobile coverage delayed

22 Dec 2015

The establishment of an islandwide mobile coverage in Cyprus – which was agreed between the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) leader Mustafa Akinci in May 2015 – has hit the buffers due to legislation hurdles, with the plan reportedly referred back to the two leaders for further consideration after a bi-communal Technical Committee failed to come to a decision on the matter. According to the Cyprus News Agency, current Cypriot legislation – which has been harmonised with EU regulation under the Regulation of Electronic Communications and Postal Services Law 112(I)/2004 – prevents cooperation with non-regulated entities, such as mobile operators offering services in the TRNC. An unnamed source said: ‘This is not a matter of the Technical Committee anymore’, adding that the commission is not expected to hold any further talks on the matter.
