The Italian state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) has not ruled out taking a stake in fixed and mobile operator Telecom Italia should the incumbent telco succeed in talks with fibre network operator Metroweb over the joint rollout of broadband infrastructure. CDP has a 46.2% stake in Metroweb Holding, which has an 87.7% interest in Metroweb. CDP’s chairman, Claudio Costamagna, has confirmed that negotiations continue between Metroweb and Telecom Italia over the deployment of fibre networks in 250 Italian towns, though he adds that talks have also been held with alternative operators such as Vodafone Italy and Wind Telecomunicazioni. One possible scenario is that Telecom Italia acquires a stake in Metroweb and CDP becomes a shareholder in the incumbent, though Costamagna has not clarified the exact nature of the talks between the two parties. Telecom Italia is the largest fixed and mobile operator in Italy, offering services under the ‘TIM’ banner.
