Rostelecom’s fibre broadband network passes 30m homes

Russian nationwide telco Rostelecom reports that its fibre-optic broadband access network based on PON/FTTx technology reached a coverage milestone of 30 million households this month, up by around five million homes in a year. The telco’s president Sergei Kalugin added in a statement that the fibre broadband network will cover 33 million households by the end of 2016, whilst Rostelecom also intends to upgrade services to offer connection speeds of up to 1Gbps. According to the company’s own figures, it currently accounts for around one-third of Russia’s PON-based fixed internet subscribers.
