VIP to speed up rollout with 800MHz band; LTE-A on horizon

8 Dec 2015

Telekom Austria-backed cellco Mobilkom Serbia, which operates under the VIP Mobile brand, has unveiled plans to use its newly acquired 800MHz spectrum to enhance its 4G network in 2016, the operator’s CEO Dejan Turk said in an interview with local daily Danas. The official said that the implementation of the new airwaves will allow it to rapidly increase its LTE footprint, noting that base stations using the 800MHz band can cover around 2.5 times the coverage area of those using 1800MHz frequencies. At present, the official noted that VIP’s LTE services are available in Belgrade, Pancevo, Kopaonik, Zlatibor, Novi Sad, Nis and Kragujevac, and the network will be available in Subotica, Zrenjanin, Leskovac and Cacak by the end of the year, equivalent to around 24% of Serbians and 43% of the country’s urban population.

In addition to expanding its LTE network, Mr Turk also told the paper that the company has one eye on introducing LTE Advanced (LTE-A) technology, enabling peak theoretical downlink speeds of up to 300Mbps. No timeframe was given for the development however, with the official simply saying that the upgrade could be expected to take place ‘soon.’
