True Corp, Thailand’s third largest cellco by users, has revealed plans to launch mass-market 4G LTE services in the 1800MHz band next week, expanding its existing 2100MHz-based LTE service. As reported by the Bangkok Post, tomorrow True will receive the 1800MHz licence it won via auction last month, while its launch plan trumps that of the other 1800MHz concession winner, larger rival Advanced Info Services (AIS), which said it would launch its first 4G service in mid-December. Thiti Nantapatsiri, group executive director of True Corp, announced: ‘We are preparing to launch our high speed 4G service ahead of AIS to fight for a bigger market share. We have a combined 25MHz of [1800MHz and 2100MHz] operating bandwidth for 4G commercial service, compared with AIS having only 15MHz [in the 1800MHz band]’. Second-placed cellco DTAC has already introduced 1800MHz LTE using refarmed spectrum alongside 2100MHz-based services.
