Idea to purchase Videocon 4G spectrum in two circles

25 Nov 2015

Idea Cellular has agreed to purchase 2×5MHz of contiguous 1800MHz spectrum in the Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh West circles from Videocon Telecom for a consideration of INR33.1 billion (USD498.6 million). The transaction is still subject to due diligence and approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The spectrum rights are valid until 2032. Idea plans to use the frequencies for LTE service in the two regions, bringing its LTE spectrum footprint up to twelve service areas. With the completion of the deal, Idea notes that it will be able to offer a full range of mobile services, including 2G, 3G and 4G technologies in all of its eight ‘leadership circles,’ namely: Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh West. Further, the cellco stated that it was on track to launch LTE services in 750 towns across ten circles in the first half of 2016.
