MTS Ukraine launching Vodafone brand, expanding 3G across Kyiv

20 Nov 2015

Russian-owned cellco MTS Ukraine is preparing to expand its commercial 3G W-CDMA/DC-HSPA+ network to the capital Kyiv next week, under its new Vodafone Ukraine branding adopted via a strategic partnership with the UK’s Vodafone Group. Its website news release says that MTS is in the process of completing the installation and testing of the 42Mbps-capable network in Kyiv. Having earlier this year launched 3G UMTS (HSDPA) roaming services on the TriMob network, MTS Ukraine’s own DC-HSPA+ network coverage in Kyiv initially remained limited to selected indoor zones, whilst its full-scale proprietary network launches kicked off in Odessa in September, and spread to other cities including Chernivtsi, Mukacheve and Uzhgorod, whilst MTS is also preparing to launch the 3G network in Mykolaiv.

MTS also announced that it is opening the first ‘Vodafone Ukraine’ branded store at its flagship retail location in Kyiv, which recently closed temporarily for the transformation. Furthermore, MTS is introducing the ‘Red’ range of mobile packages emulating Vodafone Group service features: the Red S, M and L packages enable unlimited on-net calls, data allowances of between 500MB and 5GB, voice/SMS allowances for other Ukrainian networks and 62 other countries, plus an option to add roaming across all European Vodafone group/partner networks. The M and L plans also include unlimited access to online social networking and instant messaging apps including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and Viber.
