MTN Uganda fined in mobile money dispute

17 Nov 2015

MTN Uganda has been ordered to pay UGX2.3 billion (USD630,000) in damages to local mobile money firm EzeeMoney after a judge found that the telco had acted to hamper competition in the market. In 2013 MTN cancelled an agreement signed the previous year with EzeeMoney which allowed the mobile money provider to utilise its networks, with MTN saying that EzeeMoney was a direct competitor to its own mobile money services. Meanwhile, MTN also restricted its agents from working for other mobile money service providers, The Observer reports. The Commercial Court in Kampala has ordered MTN to pay UGX800 million in general damages for loss of business, plus UGX1.5 billion in punitive damages.
