Italian fibre network operator Metroweb has revealed that it would consider entering a partnership with state-backed utility firm Enel, which is creating a new unit to develop an ultra high speed telecoms network alongside its nationwide electricity grid. A report from Dow Jones says Metroweb shareholders FSI and F2i are now in consultation to discuss a possible tie up. Italian telcos Wind and Vodafone have already said they would be willing to collaborate with Enel on its fibre rollout, which will see it using existing electricity ducts to carry fibre infrastructure. Last week Enel’s board approved the setting up of a new company to manage its broadband internet plans.
