Smile launches 4G LTE in Benin City

13 Nov 2015

Smile Communications Nigeria, the local unit of Mauritius-based pan-African telecoms group Smile Telecoms Holdings, has expanded the coverage of its 4G LTE network to Benin City in Edo State. The company first launched commercial services in Lagos and Ibadan in 2013, before widening its 800MHz LTE network to Abuja and Port Harcourt in October last year. A wide selection of data tariffs are on offer, ranging in price from NGN1,500 (USD7.4) for an allowance of 1GB (valid for 30 days) to NGN135,000 for 200GB (valid for twelve months).

Founded in 2007, Smile Telecoms Holdings owns and operates 800MHz LTE networks in Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda, and plans to launch services in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in early 2016. By the end of this year, the company says it will offer voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology and have national coverage comparable to the largest 3G network in each of its current countries of operation.
