Azerbaijani mobile service provider Bakcell has completed a two-year network upgrade project, increasing coverage and capacity. According to the operator, during the last 24 months it has doubled the number of its 3G base transceiver stations (BTS), strengthened network capacity by 72%, and expanded 3G population coverage by 14% and geographical coverage by 27%.
Bakcell now claims to have the ‘largest network in Azerbaijan’ with more than 5,300 2G, 3G and 4G BTS across the country. Under the project it has deployed 275 3G sites specifically to improve coverage in rural locations, and has upgraded 697 2G and 123 3G sites. Additionally, Bakcell has refarmed radio frequencies to support dual carrier (DC)-HSPA and LTE technology, capable of providing download speeds of up to 42Mbps and 225Mbps, respectively. Vendors Nokia Networks and Huawei supplied equipment for the project.
