HKT and Huawei show off 1Gbps mobile network demo

4 Nov 2015

Hong Kong’s HKT, which is part of the PCCW group, has demonstrated what it says is the world’s first 4.5G 1Gbps mobile network in conjunction with equipment supplier Huawei of China. The demo achieved peak speeds as high as 1.2Gbps, the two partners said, using new four carrier aggregation (4CA) technology. Earlier this year, HKT and Huawei demonstrated the world’s first IP-RAN-based 3CA system with a single-user peak rate of 450Mbps. Ken Hu, CEO and Deputy Chairman of Huawei, commented: ‘Today we are marking the beginning of the 4.5G era of wireless communications, with 1Gbps as the new mobile broadband network rate benchmark.’ According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, HKT leads Hong Kong’s mobile market, with around 47% of all subscribers.
