‘Big Three’ transfer tower assets

3 Nov 2015

China’s three mobile network operators, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, have completed the handover of their tower assets to jointly held passive infrastructure firm China Tower, the trio announced in statements yesterday. As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, the three cellcos signed an agreement to sell their entire tower portfolios to China Tower in exchange for new shares in the company. The new shares are due to be allocated by 30 November, following which Tower’s shareholding structure will be as follows: China Mobile 38.0%, China Unicom 28.1%, China Telecom 27.9% and the China Reform Corporation 6.0%.

By pooling their tower assets under a single company, which will also be responsible for future rollouts, the cellcos hope to cut investment and operating expenses whilst also minimising the duplication of infrastructure.
