Enjoy the Viu: PCCW launches new OTT video service

23 Oct 2015

Hong Kong telco PCCW says it is to launch a new over-the-top (OTT) internet video platform later this month under the name ‘Viu’. After debuting in Hong Kong, the firm says it will roll out the service to other markets across Asia and the Middle East. PCCW says the launch is designed to capitalise on the success of Vuclip, a mobile video platform which it claims now has more than eight million subscribers across ten countries. According to a PCCW press release, Viu will be based on a freemium model, offering Hong Kong users instant access to premium content sourced from Korea, Japan, mainland China and Taiwan on multiple platforms and devices. Janice Lee, Managing Director of PCCW Media, commented: ‘Viu OTT video service aims to set a new standard in OTT video landscape, with further rollout [planned] in the region in the coming six months.’
