Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) has launched the country’s fastest broadband service yet, with the unveiling of its 1Gbps PLDT HOME Fibr offer. The launch follows hard on the heels of a service upgrade earlier this year which saw all of the operator’s plans improved; at that time the entry-level 8Mbps plan was boosted to 20Mbps, while the premium 100Mbps plan was doubled to 200Mbps. The symmetrical speed service runs on the telco’s fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network that currently spans some 100,000km nationwide. With plans starting at PHP1,899 (USD40.98) per month, PLDT says its HOME Fibr offer is now available in over 1,600 Fibr-powered villages nationwide, including Valle Verde 1-6, Forbes Park, Dasmarinas Village and Ayala Alabang Village, among others.
In the wake of the launch announcement, local news portal YugaTech is claiming that PLDT’s main rival Globe Telecom is planning to cut prices for its 50Mbps and 100Mbps Platinum Home Broadband plans. Unconfirmed sources suggest that Globe intends to launch a 50Mbps ‘unlimited’ service for PHP2,499 and a 100Mbps connection for PHP3,499, which would be a significant reduction on the current charges of PHP4,999 and PHP6,999, respectively. Globe’s Platinum Home Broadband plans are available in select high-end subdivisions and condominiums in Metro Manila and Santa Rosa, Laguna.
