MTS trials first LTE broadcast in Russia

MobileTeleSystems (MTS), Russia’s largest cellco by subscribers, has announced the country’s first LTE broadcast trial in partnership with Ericsson and Qualcomm. The trial in Nizhny Novgorod used Ericsson’s end-to-end LTE broadcast solution, and involved multiple video feeds broadcast to devices equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor and X10 LTE modem. Andrei Ushatskiy, MTS’ vice president of technology, declared: ‘The delivery of broadcast entertainment is set to enter a new era in Russia and MTS intends to lead this process through our enhanced LTE broadcast technology. Consumers want to be able to watch premium, high-quality content, such as live sporting events, when and where they wish, and MTS will provide the best mobile solution to this need.’ According to Ericsson, half of Russian consumers already watch video and/or TV on smartphones and 37% are willing to pay for high-definition video.
