New mobile bid deadline 11 Nov, following Orascom reinstatement

12 Oct 2015

Lebanon’s Department of Tenders has postponed to 11 November the opening of the bids for the country’s mobile network management tender, reports BusinessNews.com.lb, quoting the department’s director general, Jean Ellieh. The postponement was in compliance with the State (Shura) Council’s order to reinstate Orascom Telecom, Media & Technology (OTMT) in the tender process, after the telecoms ministry had previously excluded the Egyptian firm’s application for being late. OTMT – which currently manages one of Lebanon’s two state-owned cellcos, Alfa – will bid for a new contract alongside rival mobile operator Touch Lebanon’s current management company Zain Group (Kuwait), while unconfirmed reports recently claimed that Orange Group of France was the only other applicant to submit initial bid documents. Three other firms which had bought the tender documents were Maxis (Malaysia), Turkcell (Turkey) and Detecon (part of Germany’s Deutsche Telekom), while the UK’s Vodafone Group also picked up the documents but later stated it would not be bidding for a contract.
