AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile US have struck a deal to swap 1900MHz PCS and 2100MHz/1700MHz AWS-1 spectrum licences in various markets across the country, Fierce Wireless reports citing separate regulatory filings from the two cellcos. The pair note that the swaps ‘are intended to enable more efficient operations by creating larger blocks of contiguous spectrum and aligning spectrum blocks across markets’.
Identical amounts and types of spectrum are being exchanged in each market, so if the deal gets approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), AT&T and T-Mobile will still retain the same amount of spectrum. The swaps include spectrum in markets such as Boston (Massachusetts), Phoenix (Arizona), Sacramento (California) and Austin and San Antonio (Texas). Also included in the deal are spectrum parcels covering the unincorporated territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (USVI).
