Bakcell to increase 4G coverage by installing 600 LTE sites

8 Oct 2015

Azerbaijani mobile operator Bakcell has announced plans to expand the coverage of its 4G LTE network to reach 98.75% of the Absheron peninsula during the first quarter of 2016. The operator is aiming to instal 600 additional base stations in the region over the next six months, thus taking its total number of cell sites in operation to more than 1,000. Preparation work is already underway. Following the expansion Bakcell intends to extend the rollout of its 4G network to other regions of Azerbaijan.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Bakcell introduced its 4G services in the capital city Baku in May 2015, with 373 4G-enabled sites at launch. The operator however was beaten to the punch by rival Azercell, which announced the launch of an 1800MHz LTE network in May 2012.
