nbn launches first satellite

nbn (formerly NBN Co) has announced the successful launch of its first broadband satellite into orbit. ‘Sky Muster’ was sent 36,000km into space from the Guiana Space Centre in South America and will undergo final technical testing over the coming months, ahead of a commercial launch scheduled for mid-2016. Upon entering into service the satellite is expected to provide wholesale speeds ‘significantly faster’ than those currently available, and the company has said it will play ‘a critical role in providing fast broadband access to around 400,000 Australian homes and businesses’.

Commenting on the development, nbn CEO Bill Morrow said: ‘Many homes and businesses in regional and rural Australia still rely on dial-up level speeds and have little or no access to a commercial broadband service – this satellite will help to close the divide and ensure no-one gets left behind.’
