Cell C planning to enter FTTH market

25 Sep 2015

South African wireless operator Cell C is targeting the domestic fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) market, with plans to launch commercial services in the first quarter of 2016. In an interview with TechCentral, Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos said that his company is aiming to deploy its own FTTH infrastructure – which will be operated by a separate newly established company – on an open-access basis, with plans to have between 60,000 and 80,000 homes within its footprint at launch. Dos Santos said: ‘It’s not simply about putting FTTH in and then adding access to data … it is about the content you provide,’ noting that his company is currently in discussions with a number of international content providers. Further, Dos Santos disclosed that Cell C is looking to offer ‘innovative’ services, including video on demand, at competitive prices.
