Privately-held US cableco Cox Communications is preparing to stage DOCSIS 3.1 field trials in 2016, with a commercial deployment anticipated in 2017. According to MultiChannel News, Ony Anglade, Cox’s Senior Manager of Access Sustaining Engineering, outlined the cableco’s DOCSIS 3.1 strategy at a CableLabs gathering in Colorado earlier this week. Anglade said that Cox will begin rolling out DOCSIS 3.1-based customer premises equipment (CPE) as soon as the products themselves are certified, adding that because these devices will support DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1 IP traffic, the service provider will be able to roll out Gigabit broadband services over its existing hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) network ‘in widespread fashion’.
