nbn announces commercial launch of FTTN product

nbn (formerly NBN Co), the company overseeing Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) project, has announced what it called ‘another big step towards [its] goal of connecting eight million premises to the network by 2020’ with the commercial launch of its fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) product. An initial rollout of the technology has been confirmed in Belmont, New South Wales, with nbn aiming to have 500,000 FTTN premises ready for service by mid-2016, rising to 3.7 million by mid-2018. Further, nbn has said it expects to be able to activate end-users much faster due to the simple installation process of FTTN (compared with other technologies such as FTTP [fibre-to-the-premise]), and aims to have 1.6 million premises connected via FTTN by mid-2018.

In order to bring the technology to consumers, nbn noted that it has already signed Wholesale Broadband Agreements (WBA) allowing for the sale of FTTN services with over twenty Retail Service Providers (RSPs) including: Telstra, Optus, Optus Wholesale, Exetel, TPG, iiNet, AAPT, SkyMesh, Harbour ISP and M2 Group (Dodo, iPrimus, Commander) to sell FTTN services.

Commenting on the development, Tony Cross, Chief Architect at nbn said: ’Our own FTTN end-user trials have been hugely encouraging … with most end-users … getting wholesale speeds of 100Mbps (download) and 40Mbps (upload).’
