Vodafone UK has announced that it will soon enable its customers to make and receive calls via Wi-Fi on a nationwide basis, in order to extend its voice services beyond the reach of its cellular network. The launch of ‘WiFi Calling on Vodafone’ – allowing calls to/from any domestic network without the need to use any mobile app – will be implemented ‘over the next few weeks on a number of leading smartphones’, Vodafone’s press release informs. The service will be available at no additional charge to any post-paid customer on a Vodafone Red Bundle with a compatible handset.
The introduction of WiFi Calling On Vodafone follows recent service rollouts including the nationwide implementation of High Definition (HD) voice technology, ‘4G+’ Carrier Aggregation and the ‘Vodafone Rural Open Sure Signal’ programme aimed at giving remote communities mobile coverage for the first time. Vodafone UK says its GBP2 billion (USD3.09 billion) investment programme during 2014 and 2015 is ‘focused on bringing stronger indoor and outdoor network coverage, and mobile internet access to more communities and businesses. This has already seen 4G extended to 626 cities, towns and districts as well as thousands of smaller communities across the UK, giving more than 70% 4G population coverage to date.’
