Telefonica Espana, which offers its services under the Movistar banner, has contracted French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent for the transformation of its fixed and mobile networks with the latter’s IP technology and services expertise. Alca-Lu will deliver its IP routing technology as part of the Spanish operator’s three-year ‘Fusion Red IP’ project, which is expected to get underway in the coming months in Murcia. It is understood that under the project, the vendor will replace older routers within Telefonica Espana’s network, using its IP routing portfolio to perform core routing and layer two and three edge routing functions and act as a broadband network gateway for the provision of residential services. With such work expected to enable the Spanish operator to use network capacity more efficiently and optimise data and video delivery, it will also ‘[set] the stage for advanced services in the future’.
Commenting on the development, Joaquin Mata, Network Technology and Operations Director at Telefonica Espana, said: ‘As we ramp up our video and high-bandwidth data service offers we are committed to delivering the best possible quality of experience for our customers. By working with Alcatel-Lucent to leverage its IP Routing and Services expertise we will be able to manage our network with even greater efficiency.’
