Japanese telecommunications group KDDI Corp (au) has released its financial results for the first quarter ending 30 June 2015, highlighting a 29% rise in net income to JPY143.9 billion (USD1.16 billion) from JPY111.4 billion in the corresponding year-earlier period, as operating revenue climbed 7% from JPY977.4 billion to JPY1.08 trillion. KDDI’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 11% y-o-y to JPY367.5 billion and operating income surged from JPY193.6 billion to JPY231.0 billion on the back of strong upward total average revenue per account (ARPA), which climbed 15.3% y-o-y, as value added ARPA sales increased 2.6% on the same period of 2014. EBITDA margin of 35.1% was better than the 33.8% reported in the group’s first quarter results for the three months to 30 June 2014. KDDI ended June with a total of 44.07 million au subscriptions, up from 43.48 million three months earlier as smartphone penetration totalled 55.1% of the base, compared to 54.3% at end-March 2015. CAPEX for the fiscal first-quarter topped JPY144.9 billion, broken down as JPY80.6 billion for its mobile arm and JPY64.4 billion for fixed services, down from JPY160.4 billion a year ago (JPY97.0 billion for mobile and JPY63.4 billion for fixed).
