Vodafone Italy has selected Nokia Networks to introduce commercial voice-over-Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) services on its network. Under the terms of the five-year contract Nokia Networks will implement its multifunctional Telecommunications Application Server (TAS) in a virtual, cloud-based environment to ‘improve service agility and optimise network resource utilisation’ for the cellco. According to a press release the vendor has delivered its Mobile Softswitch (MSS) with enhanced Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (eSRVCC) solution, to assist in voice call continuity between VoLTE and circuit-switched networks. Nokia has also assumed the responsibility for network planning and optimisation services designed to support the VoLTE rollout.
The VoLTE service – branded ‘Call +’ – is available at no extra charge to all customers with compatible smartphones, following a network update. TeleGeography notes that Vodafone currently offers LTE coverage in 4,800 towns and cities nationwide, while infrastructure in 450 cities and towns has been upgraded to 225Mbps LTE-Advanced (LTE-A).
