DOCOMO announces five more vendor partners in 5G R&D push

28 Jul 2015

Japan’s leading mobile operator by subscribers NTT DOCOMO has announced that it is entering into separate collaborations with five additional vendors, namely Intel Corporation, Keysight Technologies, Panasonic Corporation, Qualcomm Technologies and Rohde & Schwarz, as it looks to forge ahead with trials and technological development of fifth-generation (5G) mobile communications services. DOCOMO is seemingly looking to boost its 5G push, having already collaborated with the likes of Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Nokia and Samsung, since May 2014. The cellco plans to start deploying next generation 5G services from 2020, ultimately promising ultra-high speed data rates of over 10Gbps and 1,000 times the capacity of LTE, which industry watchers note will alleviate the proliferation of connected devices in an emergent Internet of Things (IoT) environment. ‘Global expectations for 5G are growing as we approach the start of the standardisation phase,’ said Seizo Onoe, executive VP and CTO at DOCOMO. ‘We are delighted to form these new collaborations on 5G experimental trials for wider technical areas to establish the 5G ecosystem with additional world-leading global vendors to promote R&D targeted at 5G deployment in 2020.’
